The stage is set and the lights are blazing as African Renaissance Theatre (A.R.T) opens the university tour of Sleep Sef Na Wahala, a play written by Africa Ukoh and directed by Williams Obasi. A.R.T has teamed up with the Department Of Theatre Arts, University Of Abuja and an ensemble of ex-Unibuja theatre arts graduates to bring this production to the campus.

Sleep sef na Wahala is a comedy about Amaechi, a half-employed-and-half-unemployed part time worker and full time slave.

After a soul-crushing 72 hour work shift, all Amaechi wants is sleep. Unfortunately for Amaechi, his landlady wants him. His neighbour also wants him. The police want him. Even the friendly neighbourhood preacher wants him. Amaechi just wants sleep. But does sleep want Amaechi?

Shortlisted for the 2009 Abuja Writers’ Forum competition, this hilarious play promises big laughs and great entertainment after the class’ wahala.

Band Aid premiered in May, 2014 and recorded over large audiences and rave review in the media and on online, which prompted a repeat showing in December 12, 2014 at the MUSON.

Band Aid is the story of three Band mates – Femi , Flex, and Ton, connected by their love for music who meet and fall in love with Ivie who is also a music enthusiast.

They think she can help them conquer their fears and become successful. They think she has come to save them from themselves but she takes them on as a project to fill a void in her life. What happens when her demons emerge from the past she is trying to escape from? This is the conundrum at the heart of this funny, reflective and exhilarating play.

The play draws the audience in with good humour, AMAZING music and hits them with the truth they need to hear about chasing ones dreams and fighting ones fears.

Band Aid 2015 also features Toyin Oshinnaike who plays Sekere, Toju Akiya Ejoh who plays Ralph.

This production is a collaboration between Majmua Theatre, Live Theatre on Sunday and TerraKulture.

Majmua Theatre will also be showcasing short Excerpts from Bele and Abija

Bele (a collection of true pregnancy stories. From the rich poor and everyone in all facets of life. It is a majmua theater initiative and I am showcasing pieces from it as a preparation for the actual productions next year)

Abija ( a revolutionary story set in early nigeria. Totally fictional, it asks if the cancer of corruption will die with the older generation? )

Stage Play: THE MISTRESS OF WHOLESOME This Sunday

Everyone loves a great show, and this is what MISTRESS OF WHOLESOME is!

What will you do if your husband’s mistress showed up at your door, to ask for an odd “favor” ?

In this play, Moji ‘the mistress’ surprises Adesuwa, ‘the wife’ of Lakunle in their home and holds her hostage. According to Moji, Lakunle has now fallen back in love with Adesuwa, as the couple has gotten closer in their efforts to adopt a baby.

Moji is naturally ‘very put out’ by this and wants Adesuwa to convince Lakunle to fall back in love with his mistress so that things can be the same as they were for the past few years.

Adesuwa, who is desperate for a baby sees Lakunle playing ‘the good and attentive husband’ as the only way that she will ever manage to adopt a child and naturally refuses.

Things get even more complicated in this comic stage play when a gentleman from the adoption agency arrives to interview Lakunle and Adesuwa and to screen them as potential parents. When it turns out that Lakunle is actually locked in the trunk of Moji’s car across town, the two women must act fast to salvage a situation that is going downhill at a rate of knots!

This November, playwright Sefi Atta and theatre director Patrick-Jude Oteh team up for the production of “Last Stand,” featuring the acclaimed Jos Repertory Theatre.

“Last Stand” is the first in a new series of modern Nigerian family dramas written by Atta, and the play is about a battle of wills between a dying general and his estranged heirs.

When General Mashood Balogun on his deathbed decides to leave his estate to his first son Rotimi, bypassing his daughters, he creates an uproar in his family. Rotimi, a medical doctor, refuses to step into his father’s shoes, and his father stands firm in his bid to make Rotimi his successor.

As the Balogun family conflict plays out, Rotimi in the end is forced to look after his dying father. But who will win the final face-off between father and son?

Patrick-Jude Oteh is a trained theatre director and holds a Master of Theatre Arts and a Master of International Law and Diplomacy, with an emphasis on international economic law. He is the founding artistic director of the Jos Repertory Theatre as well as the festival producer of the annual Jos Festival of Theatre currently in its ninth season. He holds fellowships with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington D.C., the Brademas Center for the Study of Congress at New York University, and the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP).

Sefi Atta is the author of novels “Everything Good Will Come” (2005), “Swallow” (2010), “A Bit of Difference” (2013), and the short story collection “News From Home” (2010). Her radio plays have been broadcast by BBC Radio, and her stage plays have been produced internationally. Her recent stage credits include her one-act plays “The Naming Ceremony,” which was directed by Ifeoma Fafunwa and premiered at London’s Theatre Royal Stratford East in 2012, and “Hagel auf Zamfara,” which was directed by Nick Monu and finished its two-year run at Germany’s Theatre Krefeld in 2013
